Happy Earth Day 🌱
Every year on April 22, we celebrate Earth Day as it marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.
Today, Earth Day is widely recognised as the largest secular observance in the world, marked by more than a billion people every year as a day of action to change human behavior and create global, national and local policy changes.
Digital and social media are bringing these conversations, protests, strikes and mobilisations to a global audience, uniting a concerned citizenry as never before and catalysing generations to join together to take on the greatest challenge that humankind has faced.
Change starts with action. Better yet, an action that affects the world around you.
WAYS TO CELEBRATE EARTH DAY AT HOME
Earth Day can be celebrated easily by all of us, at home.
Here are some ideas for you:
Plant a tree
This is such a great way to work together with your local community. Trees produce oxygen and that's something both humans and wildlife need to survive, it’s pretty simple, isn’t it?
However, sadly hundreds of thousands of trees are getting cut out yearly in order to make room for shopping centers, offices and other building projects such as warehouses. Planting a tree helps restore the balance of the ecosystem.
Pick up trash
Picking up trash from public places is something that we wouldn't be doing in an ideal society. Sadly, the ugly truth is that we can easily find trash basically anywhere. Take a trip to your local park, get a bag and some rubber glove and pick up the trash.
Earth Day is also a great opportunity to learn more about recycling. Recycling is a surprisingly easy task to do at home by sorting paper, plastic, and aluminum separately and trying to come up with solutions to use them again, instead of throwing them away. Recycling is another small way to make a big impact on the environment.
TAKING CARE OF THE EARTH BY SHOPPING LOCAL
At The Sun & My Soul, we source ethically responsible, sustainably-made products from small businesses and independent makers across the UK who share our commitment to the environment.
Why you should support small businesses?
- Positive impact on the local economy: Local and small businesses have a smaller carbon footprint than larger companies.
- Sustainable products: They tend to have a shorter manufacturer-to-consumer journey, this way being transparent.
- Ethical production: Producing goods locally means more transparency in ingredients, materials and workforce.
